marlene assessment

Dogs Name: Marlene Breed: Bull Mastiff Sex: F Age: Approx 5yrs Date: 17/03/12
SITUATION Dogs reactions
Person casually walks past dog while dog is eating (meal or special food) Marlene shows no aggressive or appeasing behaviours.
Person tries to pick up bowl while dog is eating (meal or special food) Marlene will carry on eating until the bowl is out of her reach. She makes no attempt to go after the bowl and goes into a sit.
Person tries to pick up food that has fallen to floor while dog is trying to reach it Marlene moves forward quickly towards the treats. Once the treats are picked up, she shows no unwanted behaviours. If the
treats are covered, she shows slight problem solving behaviours, but eventually gives up.
Person tries to touch or take away high value food that dog is eating or holding Marlene takes the treat away. She doesn’t try to run away and easily lets you take the treat from her mouth.

Person reaches hand towards dog Marlene shows slight appeasing behaviours and looks away.
Person reaches over dog’s head Same as above.

Marlene shows slight appeasing behaviours but no attempt to get away.
Person pushes down on dog’s back Marlene remains static but refuses to go down.
Person pushes down on dog’s rump Marlene goes straight into a sit.
Person tries to get dog to lie down by voice command Marlene knows this command well with slight appeasing behaviours.
Person tries to get dog to lie down by physical pushing Same as when pushing down on dogs back- static but refuses to go down.
Person tries to get dog to roll over on its back by physical manipulation Whilst Marlene is lying down, she is very easy to roll on her back. While she remains static, she shows a slight fear response.
Person tries to groom dog’s head , torso, or legs (ie other than feet) Marlene is quite accepting of grooming, however, if the brush is offered up in front of her face/ over her head, she shows
appeasing behaviours.
Person touches dog’s feet or uses comb or scissors on dog’s feet Marlene is very accepting of having her feet touched.
Person clips or tries to clip dog’s toenails Not tested due to colouration of nails.
Person tries to bathe dog, including towelling off after bath Not tested.

Stranger in house tries to pet dog Marlene had no issues with the stranger touching her although there was slight appeasing behaviours Marlene was looking for
Attention

Dog walks past familiar non reactive dog Marlene tries to avoid the dog, she shows slight appeasing behaviours.
Dog walks past unfamiliar non reactive dog Same as above.
Dog walks past familiar reactive dog Marlene tries to diffuse the situation by showing appeasing behaviours. However, if she is not given means of escape, she will
defend herself, but comes away easily.
Dog walks past unfamiliar reactive dog Same as above.
Marlene appears to lack confidence. Marlene must be handled very gently and positively rewarded for all wanted behaviours. Under no circumstances should any slightly harsh methods be used. Marlene is easily trainable, so fun positive training will help build bond between Marlene and her new owner and help her build her confidence All these behaviours were shown at the time of this assessment conducted by Shaun Aldridge (Ruff Diamond Dog Training); however these behaviours may change in different circumstances.
